MSCA Bughouse Chess Championship
Join us for the Mississippi Children’s Museum’s MSCA Bughouse Chess Championship on January 27, 2024!
Since school and community chess programs have been created and revitalized, the 1500-year-old game has seen a resurgence in Mississippi. These tournaments are an important opportunity for children in Mississippi to not only exercise their skills, but self-confidence. A growing body of research indicates that playing chess improves students’ problem solving and critical thinking skills, which directly translates to their math, science and reading scores.
Unrated Divisions:
- K-5
- K-8
- K-12
Registration Fees:
- $20 Entry Fee per Tournament Participant (For both MCM Members & Non-Members)
- $5 per Accompanying Adult/Child (Free for MCM Members)
- All fees will increase by $5 for walk-in registrants
- Online registration closes on Jan. 24, 2024
- All entry fees include access to all museum exhibits during the event only
Pre-registration is recommended & appreciated. Check-in and on-site registration will be available in the EDU from 9:00am – 10:30am. Walk-in registration will be cash-only. Please note that seats are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis, so we highly recommend pre-registering.
Rounds:
- First round begins at 12:00pm
- Everyone will play in 10 rounds (Swiss Paired), G/5+0 Partner Bughouse. No eliminations.
- A player without a partner will be paired with another lone player on the day of.
- Chess sets (board/pieces/clocks) will be provided for use during the tournament.
- Tiebreaks by: Modified Median, Sokoloff & Cumulative Calculations
Awards:
Teams with a single unrated player will be awarded according to the other player’s rating. If both players are unrated, the team is only eligible for the lower rating award category.
- K12: 1st – 3rd Partner Teams with Average USCF Rating OVER 1000
- K12: 1st – 3rd Partner Teams with Average USCF Rating U1000
- K8: 1st – 3rd Partner Teams with Average USCF Rating OVER 700
- K8: 1st – 3rd Partner Teams with Average USCF Rating U700
- K5: 1st – 3rd Partner Teams with Average USCF Rating OVER 400
- K5: 1st – 3rd Partner Teams with Average USCF Rating U400
