DESCRIPTION:Scholastic Chess Tournament \nJoin us on Saturday\, April 25\, for the Mississippi Children’s Museum – Meridian’s Scholastic Chess Tournament!  \nSince school and community chess programs have been created and revitalized\, the 1500-year-old game has seen a resurgence in Mississippi. These tournaments are an important opportunity for children in Mississippi to exercise not only their skills but self-confidence. A growing body of research indicates that playing chess improves students’ problem-solving and critical thinking skills\, which directly translates to their math\, science\, and reading scores. \nGrade Unrated Divisions:\n\nK-2\nK-4\nK-7\nK-12\n\nRated Divisions: (All Ages Welcome)\n\nU500\nU900\nOPEN\n\nFees:\n\n$20 Entry Fee for Tournament Participants\n$5 for Each Accompanying Adult/Child\nAll entry fees include access to all museum exhibits for the day\nAll entry fees increase by $5 for day-of registrants\n\nPre-registration is recommended & appreciated. This experience is located on the C Spire plaza in front of the museum\, and is free and open to the public.\nPlease note the Splash Pad hours below… \nHours: May 2 – July 26\nWeather Permitting: \n\n1pm – 6pm: Sunday\n10am – 5pm: Tuesday – Saturday\n10am – 5pm: Magic Mondays in June and July\n\nClosed on Memorial Day \nHours: August 1 – SEPTEMBER 6\nWeather Permitting: \n\n10am – 5pm: Saturday\n1pm – 6pm: Sunday\n\nSplash Pad Rules: \n\nUse of Splash Pad is at your own risk.\nParental or Guardian supervision is required at all times.\nNo glass allowed.\nNo running or pushing down.\nDo not carry mud\, dirt\, or sand onto the Splash Pad.\nNo pets allowed.\nPlease wear appropriate swimwear. The day will kick off with our Opening Ceremony\, followed by MCM’s SUPER-lympic Games\, where children will focus on three priorities: physical activity\, healthy eating\, and social/emotional health. \nFor young children\, these physical activities will improve fine and gross motor skills\, spatial awareness\, and agility\, while older children will have the opportunity to increase their flexibility\, aerobic fitness\, and muscle strength. To encourage healthy eating\, children and caregivers can engage in hands-on activities in the Enchanted Land of Story surrounding healthy foods\, how they grow in the garden\, and how they taste. Programming components such as emotional regulation and character building will also be woven into activities throughout the event.
